Social Housing Estate – Oud-Turnhout

Arendonkse Baan, 2360 Oud-Turnhout
1963

In the 24 social housing units (1963) in Oud-Turnhout, the concrete roof slab of the houses and garages extends into the façades. The concrete has a smooth formwork finish. With the exception of the asbestos cement panels connecting some ground floor windows with those of the upper floor, the rest of the façades are constructed in dark brown brick. Individual concrete cubes protrude from the façades. At the roof edge, they serve a function: the transition to the downpipe. However, for the column between the wall and the garage roof, the accentuation of the block is purely aesthetic. Similar blocks can be found at maisons Jaoul (1955) by Le Corbusier, in the corridors of his monastery La Tourette (1959), and in the town hall of Kurashiki (1960) by Kenzo Tange.
